ELOS – ( Europe as a learning environment in schools) is a project that joins schools and educational expert organizations from all over Europe that want to prepare secondary school students for their future as European Citizens. The main aim of the project is to make pupils understand their role in the European Union through basic skills integrated into curriculum for learning, studying, living and working in the European Union. The enhanced cross-curricular work and cooperation with other European countries offer an opportunity for their further education, help to improve cultural awareness, self awareness and foreign language skills.
The involvement in ELOS project means that a school is ready to adapt the ELOS curriculum, to use “European” teaching materials, to improve foreign language, to offer European training for teachers in order to integrate “Europe” in schools and prepare a large percentage of students for their role as European Citizens.
The ELOS team members of “Purienu” secondary school are competent and highly-qualified. They all are for improving and maintaining high quality in education, especially when introducing complex notions of sustainable development in a community life and implementing the European citizenship.
1. Achieve that 100% of teachers manage to use informational technologies (levels 2, 3) and 20% of teachers know at least one foreign language of EC (level 1).
2. Create evaluation criteria of students’ achievements for all subjects and improve record-books of schoolchildren for evaluation of learning and development.
3. Modernize the environment of education and development expanding the technological and informational culture.
4. Ensure the quality of the development process and modernize it while implementing the child’s central towards development.
The community of „Purienu“ Secondary School is united, friendly, active and constantly improving its skills. It along with school staff follows the principle “To know, to communicate, to develop!” Only due to common objectives and intentions the school has got a great variety of traditional events: annual generation meetings, switching on the Christmas Tree, Parents’ Days, Charity Actions, common cognitive excursions, commemorations of National Festivals.
School students and administrative offices have been developing initiative of “Studying Together”. One of the main aspects of this is when students help their parents or close people to improve their computer skills. Only thanks to all school community the inner and outer aesthetic qualities of the school have been improved, the special environment has been developed and great traditions of communication and co-operation have been maintained. Most of the community members matter if they work or study – close people of the students, former students can come to our school, teacher their services, generate ideas and also participate in their realization.
“Purienu” secondary school developed from progymnasium that started in 1947 in Polytechnic School. Then in 1949 it was reorganised as a secondary school and in 1954 it was named Kaunas Secondary School 22.
The new school premises were built in the early 1960s. In 1993 the school was given the name of “Purienu” Secondary School.
The first head of school was J. Bruzas.
E. Balasevicius has been in charge since 1996.
The years of changes (1990 – 1997). After Lithuania regained its Independency the life of the school changed significantly. Lithuanian history, customs and traditions were considered enormously important. New subjects such as religion (or ethics), IT, the basics of business were introduced in the curriculum and the school museum was re-established too. New festivals such as Shrove Tuesday, the school name-day, Easter, Kaziukas’s fair, St. Valentine’s Day, National festivals appeared. Students’ senate was elected.
1999 – 2000. The school took up the development of the school community education that aims at achieving democratic objectives and the encouragement of educators to use modern educational methodology in their work. The improvement of students’ progress was implemented using comparative analysis.
The profiled teaching and training experiment started in 11 – 12 classes in 1999. Now there are two profiled branches: humanitarian and science.
The school took part in many project activities (“Junior Achievement”, SOCRATES, technological education project with FESTO and Kaunas University of Technology, Institute of Education, the Basic of Business project together with Swedish Scientific Institute and many foreign language projects).
2001 – 2002. The school was aiming at the development effective education process through lesson quality development, teachers’ qualification improvement and realization of new learning paradigm.
In 2001 school building was renovated.
In the school year of 2001 – 2002 Kaunas Pedagogical Clinic was established at school. It aims at promoting of co-operation between Kaunas Technological University and Kaunas Municipality and its activity is based on the model of the partnership networks and development of competences of school students, teachers, administrative offices and all school community.
Vision: The school of general education as a learning organization, affording primary, basic and secondary education programmes. School achieving to have one shift and 1200 students, rendering qualified development, orientated to students’ and their parents’ needs. There are competent and highly-qualified (3 doctors, 16 masters, 3 experts, 35 teachers methodologists, etc.) teachers and specialists of extra-curriculum development working at a school.
Mission: School an independent community of students, their parents and teachers, based on principles of democracy, humanism and general human values, achieving definite aims of development.
